Background on Australian Library Week -- and the Australian library Week Oration

Australian Library Week
Australian Library Week was first celebrated in 1968 under the auspices of the Australian Library Promotion Council. The Council folded in the late 1980s. After an intermission of some years the Australian Library and Information Association assumed responsibility for Australian Library Week and activities and promotion of the event have steadily gained momentum.

Australian Library Week provides an opportunity to showcase libraries and information agencies and their professional staff, and to introduce new services and skills to the community.

Australian Library Week is:

  • a chance to find out about the wide range of services which your local public library has to offer;
  • about recognising the vital role which specialist libraries play in corporations, government departments, hospitals and other institutions;
  • about thinking of the information future;
  • about emphasising the significance of libraries in the maintenance of history and culture at a community and a national level;
  • about the importance of catering for disadvantaged groups who cannot access other types of media;
  • a chance to think about the role which libraries play in your local community, office environment and personal life.

During Australian Library Week, libraries around Australia will offer many different programs and events to show case the variety of resources and programs available. Take the time to explore the wonderful resources in your library.

The Australian Library Week Oration
The Australian Library Week Oration was established in 1995 to mark Australian Library Week and to celebrate Australia's libraries. It provides an opportunity for a prominent Australian to outline the importance of information to the nation. Past presenters are Sir Anthony Mason, Dr Lowitja O'Donoghue and Warren Horton.
