Library Week image
A special project of the Australian Library and Information Association

Power your mind! 12-18 May 2003

Some possible activities for libraries

Quiz Pick a theme or area that will utilise your own resources and situations (location/sectors/clients). You could have a different question for each day. At the end of the week, prizes could be awarded. Depending upon the subject chosen, an expert from that area could be invited to suggest a question and sponsor a prize. Depending on the clients, 'how to find' sheets could be provided - these could link into the processes of information literacy.

Don't just target the vast amounts of free information available on the internet but also include questions that require the quiz-goer to log on to a library/subscription site. The idea of LIW is to showcase libraries and their role in the information economy. By limiting questions to 'free' websites, the library becomes somewhat redundant - people can answer from their desk or from home. Fun library specific questions could include, for example, 'What colour are the chairs in the local studies room?' Also include paper resources.

Offer internet classes/lessons particularly to specific client groups. Invite school groups for workshops.

Exercise Get together with the local fitness centre as a partner/sponsor and a have a 'power' walk.

If you have any great ideas for activities please let us know. You can publicise them for free in the events pages of inCite and right here, too. Send the relevant information to events@alia.org.au.nospam (please remove '.nospam' from address)
