Australian Library and Information Week 2005 eventsLibraries around Australia will celebrate Library and Information Week (LIW) this month with some fantastic events aimed at raising awareness of the value of libraries, information services and information professionals around Australia. ALIA West - in partnership with the City of Belmont - will start the week on Monday 23 May with An Evening of Excellence at the City of Belmont reception rooms. The evening's proceedings will include the presentation of the ALIA Excellence Award to Natasha Griggs and the presentation of the FA Sharr Medal. National Library Technician's Day will be celebrated on Tuesday 24 May, with library technicians throughout the nation holding events. The ABS LEP Excellence Award will be announced during an evening event at ABS House, Canberra on Tuesday 24 May. As part of the Sydney Writers' Festival, well known US author and librarian, Nancy Pearl will speak at an exclusive free event for librarians on Thursday 26 May 2005 in Sydney. Thebarton Senior College in South Australia are using LIW as a springboard to promote and highlight their new resources around language and cultural diversity. They will also launch a display of Parenting SA materials during LIW. The Geelong Regional Library Corporation will celebrate with guided library tours, preschool storytime, financial investment education sessions, competitions and an appearance by Cats football player appearances at Corio and Newcomb libraries. In NSW, Marrickville Libraries (Sydney) will be holding book sales, Behind the Scenes tours, internet classes and preschool storytime, along with a Trivia Night at the Marrickville Town Hall.
