The Boroondara Library Service serves a community which values “well-maintained public places and community events where people of all ages and backgrounds can interact, learn, and be active” . As a much valued service, Balwyn Library is the most heavily used branch with an average of over 400,000 loans each year.
For the large number of seniors, retirees and those who live in single households the library provides a daily point of social connection in addition to free public events and an extensive home library service.
Families with preschool children are serviced with weekly programs such as preschool story time and sing baby sing, in addition to an extensive and well used junior collection housed in a welcoming child-friendly space, with the ability to annex into a nearby meeting room.
The larger study area, 5 technology enabled study rooms and open 1st floor open space accommodate high school students attending nearby high schools. Young people and students appreciate the relaxed feel of the atrium and teenage areas which have multiple points for power and USB connectivity.
The prominently located Chinese collection caters to the 13% of Balwyn residents who are born in China and the wide aisles and welcoming casual seating areas allows for complete access by group visits from nearby aged care facilities and disability services.
