Shellharbour’s recently opened City Library is part of the new Shellharbour Civic Centre which also includes a museum, a 350-seat auditorium and Council’s administration centre.
The building is framed by the outdoors with a Civic Square at the front complete with public art installations, landscaped green areas at the rear and a stunning outlook to the Illawarra Escarpment. The centre follows sustainability principles and includes design features that support a Green Star rating and a sophisticated building management system.
Architects for the Civic Centre were Design Inc in association with Lacoste Stevenson.
From a generous shared foyer, visitors are welcomed into a 2000 square metre library, featuring low shelving, a wonderful variety of seating and several meeting rooms. The focus is on user-friendly with collections displayed in genre, retail-style. The library staff are roving and engaging proactively with customers wherever they are. The space is being activated by a diverse range of programs to engage the community and welcome them into their community lounge room.
The end result is a library with a unique ambience.
