ALIA QLD LIBRARY TECHNICIANS GROUP
The ALIA Qld Library Technicians Group is a very active and energetic bunch of people. These qualities in relation to our group have been remarked upon over many years, in particular by other library group office bearers. They are seen as being very desirable in a group, so we are very pleased to be recognised in this way.
Our group aims to offer support, networking and workshops/seminars and other learning opportunities for library technicians and students; to promote membership of ALIA and the various benefits this brings; and to provide a forum for information and discussion of issues which affect library personnel in their workplace.
In general, we try to hold an open meeting every month or a workshop or seminar instead of a meeting. On Saturday 17 March 2007, our group hosted an afternoon workshop at the Banyo Campus Library of Australian Catholic University. The sessions lasted for 30 minutes each and were conducted on a rotational basis so that 4 areas of library work were examined - Interlibrary Loans/Document Delivery, Acquisitions, Cataloguing, and Reference. There were 14 attendees and the feedback provided indicated that this was a very worthwhile enterprise, and one which the group will seek to enlarge upon on further workshops later in the year.
This year we will once again support the ALIA Quorum group in hosting a stand at the Brisbane Careers and Employment Expo in April 2007. Last year's expo was a first and our technicians group were very involved and we enjoyed the experience as well.
In Library Week this year (21 - 25 May) our group will once again support the Quorum Group's Trivia Night at which we will present our award for Library Technician of the Year [Recent Graduate]. Last year, library technicians numbered approximately 35 - 40 of the attendees at the Trivia Night event, and it was a great way to show recognition to our award recipient by being acknowledged by all her peers, not just the technicians group and her work colleagues. So keep an eye on the ALIA web calendar and I'm sure you will see our group's name mentioned often!
