Australia Day 2019 Honours List

ALIA is pleased to see that the Australia Day Honours 2019 recognised library-related recipients including:

  • Robert Thomas, a long-term member of the State Library of NSW Foundation, Council, and Public Libraries Consultative Committee, was awarded Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia “for distinguished service to the State Library of New South Wales, to business, and to the financial services sector” to add to his 2013 AM.
  • Dennis Goldner AM, member of the Library Board of Victoria, “for significant service to the community through charitable, health and cultural organisations.”
  • Terence Birtles OAM, an active member of the Friends of the National Library of Australia, “for service to the community through a range of roles.”
  • Magda Szubanski AO, ambassador for the Reading Hour in 2016, who received her award “for distinguished service to the performing arts as an actor, comedian and writer, and as a campaigner for marriage equality.”
  • National Year of Reading 2012 ambassadors Alison Lester AM, “for significant service to literature as a children's author and illustrator, and to Indigenous literacy”, and The Honourable Dick Adams OAM, “for service to the Parliaments of Australia and Tasmania, and to adult literacy.”
  • Oral historian Frances Rush OAM, who has contributed to the National Library of Australia collection, “for service to the community through social welfare organisations.”

It was good to see a number of authors featured in the Honours List, with Companion (AC) in the General Division for Jennifer Rowe, who also writes as Emily Rodda, “for eminent service to literature as an author, particularly in the children's fiction and adult mystery genres’; Member (AM) in the General Division for Sophie Masson “for significant service to literature as an author and publisher, and through roles with industry organisations”, and Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia for Matthew Condon, “for service to the community.”
