Have you organised your National Simultaneous Storytime celebrations yet? Organised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), the event encourages readers across the nation to read the same picture book simultaneously at 11:00am 27 May 2020.
This year’s book is Whitney and Britney Chicken Divas, written and illustrated by Lucinda Gifford, and published by Scholastic Australia. To help attendees celebrate on the day, they will receive digital resources including a pdf version of the book; access to the Story Box Library resources and video featuring Emma Watkins from the Wiggles; and a video of a reading in Auslan and Key Word Sign of the book.
Sue McKerracher, ALIA CEO says ‘Although this year the event will be celebrated wholly online, due to COVID-19, it will still be a fun day for all involved. We encourage everyone to get together to enjoy this great book and celebrate the importance of reading’.
As always, we have some great guest readers lined up including the book’s author Lucinda Gifford, who will be streaming her reading from the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Ursula Dubosarsky, Australian Children's Laureate 2020, Governor-General Sir David Hurley and Lady Hurley, Paul Fletcher, Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, Michelle Landry MP and Justin O'Neill from the Northern Queensland Cowboys.
For the first time ever the ABC's Playschool will be joining in on the fun, with Denise Scott reading Whitney and Britney on ABC Kids!
We would love to see your celebrations on the day on social media with the hashtag #NSS2020. For more information about National Simultaneous Storytime 2020 or to register see the ALIA website.
About National Simultaneous Storytime
Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 20th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy. Thank you to those who have made National Simultaneous Storytime 2020 possible: author Lucinda Gifford; publisher Scholastic Australia; the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa; our mailing partner Australia Post, and our official supporters Story Box Library, CleverPatch, Key Word Signs Australia, and Learn From Play.
