Download ALIA’s free promotional kit for Media Literacy Week

Canberra, 13 October: Tailored resources from the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) and National and State Libraries Australasia are available on the ALIA website for libraries participating in Media Literacy Week (24-31 October 2021).

Libraries are already leading the way in highlighting the importance of media literacy for their communities and these posters, banners and social media tiles provide a readymade package of promotional materials offering library users five practical things to do in Media Literacy Week.
The need for this global initiative is demonstrated in the Australian Media Literacy Alliance’s 2020 survey on adult literacy. Key findings from the survey were that 30 per cent of adults have a low level of media literacy and 74 per cent of respondents say they are concerned about ‘fake news’.
Sue McKerracher, Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) CEO says,  ‘We know there are significant gaps in media literacy and, as a founder member of the Australian Media Literacy Alliance, we are using the alliance’s research findings to inform the co-design of a national media literacy strategy. It is during Media Literacy Week that libraries can contribute, by hosting an event, supporting the hashtag on social media, and by providing resources to their communities through their communications channels. We have made it easy by partnering with NSLA to produce a bundle of promotional materials.’
ALIA joins ABC Education in promoting the importance of media literacy during Media Literacy Week, aiming to combat the spread of spin, dis and misinformation and ‘fake news’.
Free resources and a Media Literacy Week preparation video can be found on the ALIA website and ABC Education has also created a suite of resources your library can use and share.
