Advocacy + School Libraries = Influence

Join us for an engaging half-day seminar hosted by ALIA Schools SIG, where we delve into the ways in which school libraries are actively contributing to advocacy efforts, ensuring their influence is felt throughout educational institutions.

Event Description

In today’s educational climate school libraries are still advocating for their relevancy. So how does the school library ascertain its relevancy?

Some key ways are by providing successful services and programs, ensuring positive learning experiences for students, knowing client needs, communicating with key stakeholders and supporting the school’s curriculum.

Join us for an engaging half-day seminar hosted by ALIA Schools SIG, where we delve into the ways in which school libraries are actively contributing to advocacy efforts, ensuring their influence is felt throughout educational institutions.

This seminar is for primary and secondary teacher librarians and others involved in or supporting learning and teaching programs within a school library context.

9:10am   Keynote address: Telling our stories: the power of library advocacy 

Keynote speaker: Robyn Ellard, Executive Manager Public Participation, Yarra Plenty Regional Library

 During this keynote, Robyn Ellard will discuss the aspects of advocacy that enable how one can work towards providing high quality services and programs. Using her experience and expertise in tackling advocacy in the public libraries participants will be able to apply these tried and tested principles in the school library domain.

10.40am   Panel Session: Being an Advocate

Panellist: Trish Trchala – Head of Learning Resources, Xavier College
Milena Gates – Head of Library, Keilor Downs College

In this session our two panellists will discuss how they advocate for the library within their school. This will include the profile of the school library and identifying strengths and challenges along with some tips and hints.

11.40am   Short Break
11.45am   Workshop: Orientation Programs – an advocacy tool

In this session participants will be able to share successful activities used in Orientation Programs and develop ideas and activities that can be used with new students and new staff.
