What is Australian School Library Day?

Australian School Library Day was started in 2022 by Students Need School Libraries. The purpose of Australian School Library Day is to celebrate and highlight the glorious variety of things that your school library staff do - especially those things that may normally be ‘hidden’ from view but are so essential to the far-reaching web of impact that the school library has in your school. By raising awareness of the benefits of a well-resourced and suitably staffed school library we hope to ensure that future generations enjoy them as well.

When is Australian School Library Day?

Australian School Library Day will be celebrated on the 23rd of August 2023, which is the Wednesday of the Children's Book Council of Australia 2023 Children's Book Week®.

How can I get involved?

Australian School Library Day is a day to highlight and celebrate school libraries and this can be done in a number of ways. Social media, school newsletters, your local newspaper - think of any outlets in your community that might be able to promote and celebrate this important day. In your library you could consider making an Appreciation Wall, a book display, a scavenger hunt. You could interview your library staff, do a social media takeover or introduce a Library Ambassador Program or design challenge. However you choose to celebrate, don't forget to let us know! You can use the hashtag #ASLD2023 to share all your pics and posts for the day.
