Copyright 101

Course Overview

This is a self-paced autonomous course.
You have 6 months in which to complete the course.

Libraries and library workers are at the frontline when it comes to copyright - we collect, license and make available a variety of materials - but how confident are you when it comes to making decisions related to copyright? How well do you understand the basics, and how well have you kept up with the changes to copyright law and how it pertains to libraries and the use of library materials and technology?

Developed in consultation with the Australian Libraries and Archives Copyright Coalition (ALACC), Copyright 101 is a short, self-paced online micro credential suitable for all Australian library staff.

This professional development unit consists of 4 simple modules. You will receive a certificate of attainment upon the successful completion of this course.

Course Content

Consisting of 4 modules with a time commitment of 1.0-1.5 hours per module, you will investigate:

  • History and purpose of copyright- why do we have copyright laws, and how do they work?
  • Legalities and practicalities – What does the law say, what are the rights in copyright, what exceptions are allowed, and what are statutory licences and collecting agencies?
  • New models & a changing world - technology, fair dealing vs fair use, Creative Commons, OA and safe harbours.
  • Libraries & copyright - access, preservation, licensing, responsibilities and advocacy
